Want to share your journey to a science career with a group of gifted high school students and their parents? The Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University is hosting a summer conference and is looking for a few panelists to tell their stories.

Date: Saturday, June 26
Location: Northwestern University, Evanston campus

If you are interested in heading up this volunteer opportunity or participating in the panel on behalf of the Association for Women in Science-Chicago chapter, email awischicago at yahoo.com

Details:
Every year the Center for Talent Development, a department at the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University -- which has been providing programs for gifted students for more than 25 years, holds a Summer Conference for about 150 families of gifted students (500 people in total). We provide speakers/seminars for parents and workshops for kids (by grade). We tend to focus on career choices for students in grades 9 through 12. One of the threads we have this year is science.

Some of the other groups have found that the kids like it the best (and the surveys we conduct confirm this) when there is more than one person in a career session. For a start, it provides the kids with more "life stories" -- and they seem to find it reassuring to know that the guy who graduated with a degree in history has turned into quite a successful lawyer. And with more people, the more likely the speakers can talk knowledgeably (and with first-hand experience) about different career options.

In the career session, the panel usually spends a few minutes talking about what they each wanted to be when they were in grade school, what they are now and where that journey went along the way. Then they talk about other career options. Then they open it up to questions from the kids. We would very much like to provide this option to the students who might be interested in pursuing science as a career. To get a better idea of what we did last year, you can see the 2009 family conference brochure at: ctd.northwestern.edu/outreach.
