*Thank you to all Innovator Award Dinner Attendees!
*

Our 5th annual AWIS Innovator Award drew a record number of nominations and
after much deliberation, Dr. Kawtar Hafidi from Argonne National Laboratory
was chosen as this year’s awardee due to her innovative work in nuclei
research and her outstanding commitment to service and mentoring, especially
to women in the sciences. The Innovator Award dinner was held at Reza’s
restaurant on June 23rd, 2011 in downtown Chicago, with over 40 people in
attendance. Dr. Hafidi heads the Women in Science and Technology (WIST)
program at Argonne National Laboratory and chairs the American Physical
Society Committee on the Status of Women in Physics. For her leadership and
dedication to her students, she was recently awarded the U.S. DOE Office of
Science Outstanding Mentor award. At the Award Dinner, AWIS Chicago
President Joy Ramos provided a brief overview of AWIS and the AWIS Chicago
chapter, capped by recognition of particular chapter members. AWIS staff
writers who were part of the Scientist of the Month series were recognized
for their efforts, along with the featured scientists of the month that have
been profiled. Members at the Sustaining and Benefactor level were also
recognized for their continuing support of AWIS, as well as the
longest-standing active members of the chapter. Dr. Hafidi then shared her
interesting career path from Morocco to France to the United States and the
lessons she’s learned along the way. She also provided a brief look into the
sub-atomic world of quarks, etc, as part of her research at Argonne. The
night was an amazing success and was filled with enthusiastic conversations
among attendees. This Award was also featured in a press release by Argonne
National Laboratory
