*Project Exploration's Women In Science Training *

How do we engage in educational outreach in ways that place teaching,
learning, and students at the center? How do we communicate science
effectively to middle and high school students and bring authentic science
to communities that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM?

AWIS has partnered with Project Exploration on a workshop for scientists
interested in effective educational outreach. The techniques and ideas
shared will help participants consider what makes for effective outreach,
how to be youth-centered, and how to make science accessible to young
people. Participants will also learn of the variety of out-of-school time
opportunities for scientists to work directly with youth through Project
Exploration programming.

Project Exploration is a nonprofit science education organization that
works to ensure communities traditionally overlooked by
science—particularly minority youth and girls—have access to personalized
experiences with science and scientists. At the heart of Project
Exploration are youth programs, which impact the lives of hundreds of
students each year by fostering a long-term interest in science.

*Help AWIS Chicago and Baxter give a Special Award at the CPS Annual
Science Fair *

The best science projects from students in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS)
system will once again be featured at the annual CPS Science Fair.  It is
one of the final stages before students advance to the international INTEL
Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in May,
2012.
AWIS Chicago has been a proud supporter of this science fair for many
years. This year, we are proud to partner with *Baxter Women in Science and
Engineering (BAX WISE)* as we join forces in choosing which young girls
show the most promise and deserve a Special Award.

*Date: Friday, March 23rd, 2012
*Time: 8:00am - noon, lunch is provided
Location: Museum of Science and Industry (parking and museum admission
provided)

*Nominations are OPEN for the 6th Annual Innovator Award and the 1st Annual
Motivator Award by AWIS Chicago*

The annual AWIS Chicago "Innovator Award" exemplifies AWIS Chicago's
commitment to recognizing women in the Chicagoland area who have provided
innovative research contributions in science and engineering. However, we
are also aware that although good mentors are an important component to a
successful career, their contributions are often overlooked. To highlight
the invaluable support that a great mentor provides, AWIS Chicago is
proudly accepting nominations for the first recipient of our "Motivator
Award" this year, in addition to our "Innovator Award". Superb mentors from
any or the broad branches of STEM (science, technology, engineering or
mathematics) are eligible for this award. Letters from mentees are also
encouraged in the nomination package.

Criteria for both Awards are listed below:

*Innovator Award Criteria:*

   -

   A female scientist with innovative contributions to fields of science,
   technology, engineering, or math (STEM)
   -

   Geographically located within the Chicagoland  area
   -

   AWIS membership not required


*Motivator Award Criteria:*

   - An individual (male or female) with demonstrated service, support,
   and mentorship of women in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM)
   - Geographically located within the Chicagoland area
   - AWIS membership not required

Please submit nomination forms and supporting documents to
info at awis-chicago.org by April 1st, 2012. A winner for each category will
be chosen by the AWIS Chicago Board after evaluation of all submitted
nominations. Presentation of the awards will take place in May (date and
location TBD) at the annual AWIS Chicago Awards Dinner (sponsored by Baxter
Healthcare).
