Award Nominations are open!

AWIS-Chicago is seeking nominations for our Fourth Annual Innovator Award, in recognition of contributions to women in science in the greater Chicago area. Please note that the nominee does not have to be an AWIS member and does not have to be female. The winner of the award will be honored at a dinner in May. Past award recipients include Dr. Holly Falk-Krzesinski (Northwestern), Dr. Teresa Woodruff (Northwestern) and Dr. Tijana Rajh (Argonne). 
 
To nominate an innovative scientist, please send their name, position and reason for nomination to awischicago at yahoo.com by March 31, 2010.
 
Scientists of the Month
Congratulations to our February Scientist of the month Katherine Knight (article written by Michelle Merrigan) and our March Scientist of the Month Nicole Neubarth (article written by Heather King)!
 
Know a scientist you think should be featured in an upcoming “Scientist of the Month” article?  Send nominations to Jessica Reimer (jessica.reimer at awis-chicago.org).  Your nominee does not need to be an AWIS member or a woman, but should promote the advancement of women in science, technology, mathematics and engineering.
 

Volunteers Needed: Give an AWIS Special Award to Young Scientists at the 60th Annual Chicago Public Schools Science Fair
This science fair features the best projects from all over Chicago and is one of the final stages before students advance to the international INTELScience and Engineering Fair to be held in San Jose, California in May, 2010. 

AWIS Chicago has been a proud supporter of this science fair for many years and on this, its 60th year, be a part of this momentous occasion and help AWIS Chicago choose which young girls show the most promise and deserve an AWIS Special Award.  Last year, AWIS Chicago presented four awards to young women with outstanding science projects in their specialty. 

Date: Friday, March 19, 8am-noon
Location: Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago 
Parking, museum admission and lunch will be provided. 

If you’re interested in volunteering to judge student presentations and present an award, please e-mail Joy Ramos (joyramos at gmail.com) with your name, phone number and field of specialty.

Women in Science Symposium 2010: Building an Identity 
The Chicago Council on Science and Technology (C2ST) in partnership with the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Chicago Chapter have come together to bring you its first ever all-day Women in Science Symposium 2010: Building an Identity. The symposium, to be held on April 17th, 2010 will allow women scientists, at the academic, industry and government levels, to better recognize the number and diversity of their counterparts; create a sense of solidarity, and; broaden the spectrum of opportunities for women in Chicagoland. 
  
 Specifically the Women in Science Symposium will focus on:  
  

Insights from the field highlighting personal stories, professional   ambitions, and milestones from some of the areas most recognized leaders 
Address the state of women in a rapidly changing science landscape across academic and government sectors 
Identify needs for the future of social and systemic change at the local and national levels; science as an industry; work/life balance.  
April 17, 2010

$50 advance general registration, $75 day of symposia
$25 student registration (undergraduates/graduates)
